Judo classes on the UWS

Judo NYC is a Judo school located on the UWS (upper west side) of Manhattan.  We are a welcoming community of martial art enthusiasts. Our members are of all ages and come from diverse backgrounds but are united to develop healthy minds and bodies, and have fun along the way learning Authentic Japanese Judo.  We offer Kids and Adult classes.

Judo was created in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano after studying various forms of Jujutsu. Professor Kano synthesized the sport known as modern day Judo by combining principles of throwing and grappling.

Judo spread from Japan throughout the world, and became an Olympic sport in 1964 when the Summer Games were held in Tokyo.

The study of Judo promotes physical fitness, sportsmanship, manners, self-discipline and self-control.

The Judo student learns throwing, falling, holding, and ground wrestling techniques or grappling. Advanced Judo also involves the taking of joints and choking techniques.

Judo is the mother of many martial arts today.  The philosophy and subsequent pedagogy developed for judo became the model for other modern Japanese martial arts that developed from traditional schools). The worldwide spread of judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Sambo and Brazilian Jujitsu.  It’s pedagogical approach is also responsible for the current belt system that you see everywhere today.
